Dr. FURUKAWA Satoshi was born in 1964 in Kanagawa. He spent 165 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in 2011 as a Flight Engineer with Expeditions 28 and 29. In addition to conducting experiments on Kibo and performing maintenance on the ISS, he also supported the final mission of the Space Shuttle, STS-135. Caption courtesy of JAXA.

The mission is the seventh crew rotation flight of a Dragon spacecraft, carrying NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen, JAXA astronaut Satoshi Furukawa, and Russian cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov.

Crew Dragon is the first privately built and operated orbital spacecraft capable of flying humans. As a reusable SpaceX capsule, it transports crew members to and from the International Space Station. It will also carry paying customers to the Station and low Earth orbit. While it typically accommodates a crew of four, this number can vary depending on the mission.

Soyuz TMA-02M ferried three members of the Expedition 28 crew to the International Space Station.

Soyuz is a human-carrying capsule built and operated by Russia, capable of transporting up to three people to the Space Station at a time. It has been upgraded numerous times since its first use in the 1960s for the Soviet lunar program and was the only crewed vehicle for the Station from 2011 to 2020.

STS-121 (Discovery)

The second Return To Flight Space Shuttle mission after Columbia demonstrated all safety enhancements, this flight resupplied and prepared the International Space Station for the restart of construction and increased the Station's crew size back to three people. This mission was the third Return To Flight mission overall for the Shuttle Program, and all three were flown by Discovery.

The first reusable launch and landing spacecraft, the Space Shuttle began a new chapter of human space exploration. It launched like a rocket but landed on a runway like a plane. Shuttle crews deployed dozens of commercial satellites and two interplanetary probes to Venus and Jupiter. The Shuttle served as a mini space station and hosted hundreds of biomedical, psychological, physiological, materials science, and physics experiments that have directly benefited life on Earth. The five flight-worthy Shuttles -- Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour -- flew 135 missions over 30 years. The Shuttles helped construct the Russian Mir space station and brought nearly 80% of the International Space Station to orbit. Shuttles also deployed and serviced the Hubble Space Telescope.

Discovery's crew installed the International Space Station's largest module, the Japanese Experiment Module. The flight rotated a single ISS crewmember.

Soyuz TMA-18M

Soyuz TMA-18M ferried a single crewmember for Expedition 45 to the International Space Station. ESA astronaut Mogensen and Kazakh cosmonaut Aimbetov joined for a short duration mission to the ISS and landed with Soyuz TMA-16M.  This Soyuz mission landed the "Year In Space" crew of Kelly and Korniyenko.

Soyuz TMA-12 ferried part of the Expedition 17 crew to and from the International Space Station. South Korean astronaut So-Yeon joined for a short duration mission, returning to Earth on Soyuz TMA-11.
